How we put this together: We read Anthropic's and OpenAI's official pricing and help-center pages on 8 October 2026 and compared style and voice tools, long-document limits, in-place editing, plans and stated usage limits. We haven't run paid subscriptions of either for this article, and prose quality is subjective, so we don't score it. Prices are in USD as shown on that date. ChatGPT's amounts come from OpenAI's help center, because chatgpt.com/pricing didn't display them when we read it.

Writers asking “Claude or ChatGPT?” are usually weighing the same questions. Which one can hold my voice? Which can take a long manuscript or a folder of notes? How do I edit a draft in place? What does it cost, and when will I hit a limit?

This comparison sticks to what each vendor documents on its own pricing and help pages, read on 8 October 2026. The one thing documentation can’t settle is prose quality. It’s subjective, it varies by task, and it changes whenever a model is updated. Test both on your own material before you pay.

On the documented features that matter for writing, Claude comes first and ChatGPT second. It’s close, and the right answer depends on whether you value long-document capacity or breadth of tools.

The tools

1. Claude: long documents and a saved writing setup

  • Style control. Claude’s help center lists three layers: account-wide Instructions, project instructions, and skills, which it says can “apply communication patterns based on your own writing or preferences.” Projects hold your files and instructions, and Free accounts get up to five. We couldn’t find a current help page for the older “styles” feature, so we haven’t counted it.
  • Long documents. The pricing page lists a context window of “up to 1M, varies by model” on every plan, Free included. Chats take up to 20 files at 500MB each, and PDFs up to 1,000 pages. Project files are 30MB each, and on paid plans a retrieval mode stretches project capacity up to 10x.
  • Editing. Docs, a beta template on paid plans, are documents you write with Claude. You can highlight text, choose “Edit with Claude,” and export to Word, PDF, Markdown or Google Docs.
  • Plans and limits. Free, Pro ($17/month billed annually or $20 monthly), and Max from $100/month for 5x or 20x Pro usage. Usage resets on a rolling five-hour window, with weekly limits on paid plans.

Limitation: sharing a project needs a Team plan ($20 per seat per month billed annually, $25 monthly). Docs are in beta and paid-only.

2. ChatGPT: the broader toolkit, with sharing on every plan

  • Style control. ChatGPT has custom instructions, project instructions that override global ones, memory, custom GPTs and “Base style and tone” personalities such as Professional and Candid. OpenAI notes that for drafts like emails or social posts, ChatGPT matches your instructions and context, “not necessarily” the personality you picked. For your own voice, instructions and samples do the work.
  • Long documents. Per the pricing page, Plus lists 54K tokens of context for fast replies and 256K for reasoning (about 320 pages of input). Pro lists 128K and 400K (about 680 pages). Files can be up to 512MB, with text files capped at 2 million tokens. Project file limits are 5 on Free, 25 on Go and Plus, and 40 on Pro.
  • Editing. OpenAI’s help center describes “writing blocks”: editable drafts inside the chat, with a full-screen view, revise-selection requests and undo and redo. The older canvas help page no longer exists, though the Projects article still mentions Canvas, so check what your plan shows.
  • Plans and limits. Free, Go (price not shown where we read it), Plus ($20/month, monthly only), Pro ($100, $200 or $500/month) and Business (from $20 per seat per month billed annually, two seats minimum). Everyday text chats are listed as unlimited, subject to abuse guardrails.

Limitation: shorter stated context on Plus, and some features vary by plan, model and rollout.

How to choose

  1. Long manuscripts or big reference sets: start with Claude, whose stated context and chat upload limits are larger. With ChatGPT, work in chunks.
  2. Writing plus other media: ChatGPT’s plans include image creation, voice and deep research alongside text, so it suits people whose writing sits inside broader work.
  3. Sharing drafts with collaborators on a personal plan: ChatGPT lists project sharing on every plan. Claude needs Team.
  4. Voice consistency: both rely on instructions and samples, and neither enforces rules or approvals. Put your style guide and 10 to 20 samples in a project in each and run the same prompt. For tools that add structure, see AI writing tools that learn your brand voice.
  5. Budget: monthly pricing is the same $20. Claude drops to $17 on annual billing, while ChatGPT Plus has no annual option. Neither publishes fixed message counts, so test your own workload on a free plan.

If you write for a public company

Claude and ChatGPT are general assistants, so any rules about what a public company can’t say, and any review process, are yours to build. Parlance is built on top of AI models but adds voice training on your writing, strategy documents and published content, plus house rules (Reg FD-aware, no stock-promotion phrasing, no in-progress deal details). It’s invite-only, at $499/month self-service or $1,999/month managed, and drafts still go through your own review, and counsel where relevant.
